1956 engine in 1951 3100. I have rebuilt the carb, and distributor as well as others. It idles fine but the timing does occasionally jump to the retarded side as shown by the timing light. I thought that could be due to the rocking motion of the distributor. I was wondering if the fuel pump could be causing the power loss though. It appears to be original with the glass bowl on top. (screen has been cleaned) The carb has a new paper air filter. There is also a clear fuel filter prior to the carb. It loses power every time just before I shift to second or third gear. Any help would be appreciated.(also the coil is old and has not been replaced)

what does the "rocking motion of the distributor" mean? is the distributor loose or are you referring to the fact it turns? the turning is the advance mechanisms .... if it loses power at higher RPM I'd suspect a timing problem, maybe the centrifugal advance is sticky or the vacuum advance is weak

Thanks for the reply. The distributor "rocks" back and forth slightly due to clearances between the dist and block. I have read that it is normal and does not cause a problem. The PO had an oring there but then the advance can not turn it. I can recheck the centrifugal advance but I have already cleaned and checked out all dist parts. The vacuum advance is new and works ok. I thought maybe the fuel pump spring is weak and the engine is starving for gas??

Yes I did plus the old vacuum advance did not work so I replaced it.

with the distributor 'rocking' it may be losing good grounding at higher RPM, I'd find a washer to stop the movement [brass preferably], and maybe add a ground wire from the case to the block

Makes sense. I will add a ground wire. I don't see an easy way to stop the movement. It looks like you guys think it is ignition related. Thanks
