For helping keep this great
old truck web site
on the Internet for over 30 years! and not clogged down with Ads! Again, thanks! | | | | Joined: Dec 2012 Posts: 163 'Bolter | | 'Bolter Joined: Dec 2012 Posts: 163 | 1956 engine in 1951 3100. I have rebuilt the carb, and distributor as well as others. It idles fine but the timing does occasionally jump to the retarded side as shown by the timing light. I thought that could be due to the rocking motion of the distributor. I was wondering if the fuel pump could be causing the power loss though. It appears to be original with the glass bowl on top. (screen has been cleaned) The carb has a new paper air filter. There is also a clear fuel filter prior to the carb. It loses power every time just before I shift to second or third gear. Any help would be appreciated.(also the coil is old and has not been replaced) Howard | | | | | Joined: Feb 2002 Posts: 12,029 Cruising in the Passing Lane | | Cruising in the Passing Lane Joined: Feb 2002 Posts: 12,029 | what does the "rocking motion of the distributor" mean? is the distributor loose or are you referring to the fact it turns? the turning is the advance mechanisms .... if it loses power at higher RPM I'd suspect a timing problem, maybe the centrifugal advance is sticky or the vacuum advance is weak
Bill | | | | | Joined: Dec 2012 Posts: 163 'Bolter | | 'Bolter Joined: Dec 2012 Posts: 163 | Thanks for the reply. The distributor "rocks" back and forth slightly due to clearances between the dist and block. I have read that it is normal and does not cause a problem. The PO had an oring there but then the advance can not turn it. I can recheck the centrifugal advance but I have already cleaned and checked out all dist parts. The vacuum advance is new and works ok. I thought maybe the fuel pump spring is weak and the engine is starving for gas?? | | | | | Joined: Jan 2010 Posts: 4,263 Shop Shark | | Shop Shark Joined: Jan 2010 Posts: 4,263 | Did you remove the o ring? | | | | | Joined: Dec 2012 Posts: 163 'Bolter | | 'Bolter Joined: Dec 2012 Posts: 163 | Yes I did plus the old vacuum advance did not work so I replaced it. | | | | | Joined: Feb 2002 Posts: 12,029 Cruising in the Passing Lane | | Cruising in the Passing Lane Joined: Feb 2002 Posts: 12,029 | with the distributor 'rocking' it may be losing good grounding at higher RPM, I'd find a washer to stop the movement [brass preferably], and maybe add a ground wire from the case to the block
