root,

It takes a little to get used to how the FAM is organized.

The pages of illustrations at the front of the Manual are the index. Those pages at the front are organized into categories or topics and they reference different sections and pages in the Manual.

Here's the list I came up with. My book was falling apart so I separated the sections with tabs in a large 3 ring binder.
SECTION 0 INDEX & INSTRUCTION
SECTION 1 CAB & SHEETMETAL
SECTION 2 CHASIS
SECTION 3 FRONT SUSPENSION
SECTION 4 REAR SUSPENSION
SECTION 5 BRAKES
SECTION 6 ENGINE
SECTION 7 TRANSMISSION
SECTION 8 FUEL & EXHAUST
SECTION 9 STEERING
SECTION 10 WHEEL & TIRE
SECTION 11 CHASIS SHEETMETAL
SECTION 12 ELECTRICAL
SECTION 13 RADIATOR & GRILL
SECTION 14 BUMPER & SEALING

I added a Section 15 for Bed info

Good idea.

Every time I use a page I write the page number and subject on one of the blank pages in back. Makes it easy to find next time.

I'm curious. Are the Assembly Manuals referenced here the same as Shop Manuals for say pre-46 trucks?

no Sparky, the assembly manuals for the later years are the spec and procedure technical drawings for the assembly line supervisors, things like this and like this [from 55.2-59 manual] - unfortunately the earlier year collections seem to have been lost

It is rumored that the assembly manuals were not available for distribution. The ones that are reprinted were supposedly smuggled out of the plant.

There is an example of how technology is not better. I'd much rather thumb through a book then try and find the right page by navigation

I would like to have an assembly manual, but I am pretty disappointed with my factory service manual. It is more like a giant owners manual. Too little info covering too many years, and models, with just bits, and pieces of each one. The service manual for my 14 Tahoe is several books for like $500, and still leaves a lot to the imagination.
