While lookin for a GMC 6 for my '53 I found a guy who was parting out a '57 2 ton with an unknown straight 6. Turned out it was a 302. Took it home smile! This is a civilian block as it has a 'traditional' starter, mechanical fuel pump, and dipstick through the block. It does, however, have the sealed 24 volt distributor (with garden hose sized plug wires).

Question time,

(1) I understand I can replace the distributor with one from most any Chevy or GMC six of that era, correct?

(2) The starter is 24 volt. When I go to a 12 volt starter do I have to change the flywheel as well?

(3) I believe the carb is a Stromberg WW(?) and is governored. (a)Can I bypass or remove the governor? (b)Is this is the best carb for the engine when used in a 1/2 ton for daily driving?

I will provide as much info as possible and any pictures needed. Thanks in advance guys.

A conventional distributor will work. Count the teeth on the flywheel. I'm not sure I have ever seen the type of setup you describe on a civilian engine. Are you sure the starter is 24 volt? The Stromberg WW is a good carburetor. I would remove the governor. If you have a 4 bolt manifold, WW will bolt right on. If it is a 3 bolt, you will need a 3 bolt Holley. Or just disable the governor. It closed the butterfly when a certain velocity of air was reached. Or just leave it. You probably won't bump the governor anyway. Most of them were set around 3400.

This was an Airforce de-icer . Dual axle, five speed, 24 volt starter and generator. I don't remember now but it seems it had a single groove crank pully. The pcv line runs into the governor, I believe, so I may just leave it be . . . for now. I'd like to know that whatever flywheel I run will work with my T5, which will come later.

Also, is there any demand for the five speed from this truck? If the ad is to be believed, this is a very low milage truck. The odometer matched the ad and the trans shifts crisp, like a new one.

Any idea which transmission it is? If it's got a round bellhousing shape (SAE type bellhousing with an adapter to fit the block) and it's got an overdrive 5th. gear, I might be interested. Thanks!

This is the one picture I have of the transmission. If you need numbers off it let me know.

Update: transmission is not OD.
