I like to let the 235 warm up to almost operating temperature before taking off as it's still cold here. It has a by pass filter and it's a 1956-57 engine. Am I doing the right thing by warming her up before taking off. Some guys told me that I'm starving the engine for oil as this is a by pass canister oil filter......I don't know...that's why I'm asking for help....
Thanks, Steve

doesn't really matter, the only reason to let it warm up first is to have a working heater, but if you need that in SF you're a wimp grin the bypass filter doesn't affect oiling

Steve,

If you have an oil pressure reading during warm-up, the engine is not being starved for oil due to warm-up.

The by-pass filter simply diverts about 10% of the oil through the filter.

I warm-up the engine until I see the temperature gauge start to move.

Some people warm up the engine until they can start-off with no choke.

Now now Bill... I know you live up in a banana belt that I bet is warmer than SF on just about any given day all summer long and has a better than 50/50 chance during the winter too wink

yes, it prolly is warmer here in some summers - but I lived in the Bay area for awhile too, so I have a comparison wink even in the winter up here I usually start the truck moving within minutes, heater or no .... OTOH, I also have a block heater installed I can use if I know I'll be out on really cold days, maybe they're available down there?

Aside from all the BS posted here......it is always a good idea to allow ANY engine, gasoline, diesel, or gas turbine to warm up to recommended operating temperature before driving or putting it under a load. Adequate warm up allows for complete expansion of metal components within the engine,(minimizing wear),ensuring consistant oil flow (viscosity), and even best intake manifold vaporization of fuel.
Until the designed temp is reached, the engine is NOT operating at maximum performance and efficiency. This is why there is a heat riser system (exhaust/intake manifold), and thermostat in the cooling system to aid in warm up. Carbs with a temperature controlled choke valve depend upon engine temp to dis-engage also.

Modern day engines with computer controls actually operate in an "OPEN LOOP" mode until a pre-set engine temperature is reached then the electronics kick in to "CLOSED LOOP" whereas the timing and emmission control systems are modified for maximum performance and fuel economy.

The bypass in the oil filter is not an issue, approx 10% is bypassed at all times hot-cold or in between.

Best Regards
Will
