There's also a different material for the drive gear, depending on whether there's a cast or forged camshaft. Somebody with accurate info on the gear should chime in shortly! Jerry

You do not want to use a distributor with a gear designed for a steel cam on a cast cam, but it is OK to use a distributor(like the HEI in question)with a gear designed for a cast cam on either type of cam.

The compressor, fork lift, and yard truck have Pertronix; the 37 Buick and 52 pickup have HEI's. If you lose a Pertronix in Podunk Junction you are there till the big brown truck brings you a new one but if an HEI the nearest parts store will have what you need. As far as installation the HEI takes one wire---period. The Pertronix has two wires and should have the correct coil while everything is all self contained on the HEI. The Pertronix is prettier and guaranteed to fit since it goes into your old distributor. About a wash depending on the use in my opinion.
