So I have a used to be running '59 GMC 100 V-8. It has the short bed too.

Here are some pics...

59 GMC 1
59 GMC 2
59 GMC 3
59 GMC 4 59 GMC 5
59 GMC 1

It ran when I parked it 12+ years ago, but has sat since then. Would like to temporarily start it so I can move it out of it's current spot.

Engine oil looks good, no water or anything odd.

Should I turn the engine over for say 30 seconds to get the oil pressurized.? Any other tips I could use would be gladly accepted.

Welcome to Stovebolt.com, InsulatorKing! Do you collect insulators or is that a vocational thing?

Anyhow, you're in luck! Our crew got together and wrote a pretty comprehensive tech tip on just this sort of thing -- How to bring a dead/sleeping engine back to life

Pretty much all you need to know should be in there. Let us know (in this thread) how it goes or if you have any issues.

Again, welcome! Tell us more about your truck!

John

Hi John,

Yes, I collected insulators, but am no longer actively accumulating them.

I bought it in Nevada, and moved a bunch of stuff from there to New Mexico. Used it quite a bit for various hauling, etc.

Gave it to my daughter and she was going to fix it up, but she got married and had a baby, she gave it back to me. Now I have to figure out what to do w/ it myself.

It looks like a beautifully solid truck. I bet it won't take much to get her started -- you should be able to move through the steps in the article pretty quickly. A lot of it may seem anal, but we like to be methodical around here. We don't want anything unfortunate to happen to either you or the truck.

That was cool of your daughter to give it back. As for figuring out what to do with it .... We'll all be glad to help with that!

First thing is to get ti running (and stopping smile ) and just drive it for awhile as is -- it looks solid enough to be a driver the way it is so have some fun with it. It will come to you in good time what you should do with it.

Wow. I wish my 58 GMC was in that good of a shape. You're a lucky man and if it were me I'd be driving that truck tomorrow. Anyway good luck and I hope you keep it or send it to a fellow bolter to enjoy.Larry

Love to see the Pontiac/GMC v8 in the 50's Jimmies. That's a great survivor.
What transmission is mounted behind that?
