The Stovebolt Site Forums The Shop Area Engine Shop Got my "New Old" Engine this week end

I bought a 235 engine out of a 1954 3100. This engine has been rebuilt. All the gaskets are in good shape and the oil is clean. The bolts that hold everything on like the coil and what not, back out easily. The lifters under the valve cover and the push rods look very clean, we are going to take the oil pan off this week to check the bearings. With the engine I got a coil, carb, distributor,fuel pump,water pump, a large oil filter with new lines, rebuilt starter, transmission with fairly new clutch assembly and a 55 rear end. I bought this setup from a friend of my father in law. He builds engines and drivelines for hotrods for people. This engine had come out of a 54 3100 that the guy wanted a 350 in. Oh yeah, did I mention that all this only cost me $300? I'm dying to get it in but we are taking it slow to do it right. This is by far one of my better investments for this truck.

Sounds like good news, but I would leave the oil pan on. Some things are best left untouched, and this sounds like a good engine.

I'm with Fred T. I'd drain that oil (if it's still in there) and inspect the bottom of the drain pan in the sunlight and go from there.

I, as someone that recently took his pan off in the truck, would recommend pulling the pan and putting on some new gaskets before putting it in the truck. You might even replace the rear seal while it is still easy and not above your head.
