I was wondering what + how i could hook up light to let me know when my signals are on I can't rely on the flasher it not loud enough I have 54 3100 6volt can I run a wire from the flasher to a light and does that light need to be grounded. I had an idea to use my ignition light which is always on it runs right off the ig switch or better still i could splice into the high beam light and when it blinks from the flasher it would show at the high beem indicater Am i hoping and wishing here... What are your thoughts... Thanks Peter

Peter,

With 54 gauges, your problem is not finding a light bulb location (you will have to figure out where to run the lead off the flasher). I forget where the hi-beam indicator is located (I think it is near the top of the speedometer housing), but 180 degrees from it is the location of the directional indicator bulb. A standard bulb holder fits in that location at the rear of that housing.

When I was still riding imports I had a '75 wing that had the most annoying beeper connected to the turn signals as a reminder to turn them off. I hated the sound but you never had to worry about me driving miles with the blinker flashing. grin I know that's not germain to the thread but I thought I'd throw it in anyway. :blat:

I just went out to my truck The flasher unit has 3 prongs two are used the sise by side ones the lone prong is vacant I would bet that one would run the indicater.. On my speedo I have four holes for lights 2 are used as gauge lights one is high beam top and the bottom i presume is the ignition light. No other holes . I also have an extra bulb socket dangling but don't have any use for it It has a grey lead on it indicating it comes from the light switch ... Any more thoughts here....

Peter,

If you have the original 1954 gauge clusters, there is no ignition indicator (except for the Ammeter, perhaps).

That lower socket location was used in 1954, if you had a RPO or GM accessory turn signal set-up. If there was no 54 GM directional indicator on your truck, that bulb socket was not used (until now - go ahead, use it).

Peter,

I went to the Radio Shack web site and looked under 'buzzer'...lots of 'beep beeps' in all kinds of voltages and db levels.

The turn signal assembly are not the after market type but origanal but it looks like it was put in later in the trucks life..

Tim so your saying the bottom light which is green is not the ign light just a spare.
I have it wire directly to the ign switch. I think its agood idea to know when the ignition is on...
Where would you hook the indicater light up to the third pole on the flasher or put a meter on the flasher and find out which pole flashes. .

Cousin Stewart I my end up gettin beep beep from radio shack.

what about slicing into the high beam light which is up top and red easier to see say run a wire from the flasher to the high beam wire and when it flashes will the red light flash....Peter

sounds like a bad idea to me to "slice in" to anything other than the correct place - meaning the actual blinking lights

hook the signal setup into the hign beam indicator and you may find your headlights flashing .... for a second, until the flasher blows up grin

the original setup has dash indicator lights properly spliced in on each line to the front & rear lights lights, you just need to find a spot to place them, if there's no provision in the dash .... the factory would have some setup for them, look carefully at the back of your gauge cluster

Peter,

Without some fancy circuitry, I think you will need two lights..one for each direction.

ok mmmm so I need to find to find more wires.

When i got the truck the wiring was a mess so i systematicly rearanged them all nice and neet

The major mess was the turn signal harness old and brittle but the signals work. Ok can you tell me what the third plug is on the flasher unit like i say maybe I will test it to see if it flashes with my gauge.. Peter....

Peter,

If you want dual indicator lamps, you will have to improvise. A single indicator lamp socket was standard on all 1954 trucks at the bottom of the speedometer dial (except for flat-faced cowl).

You say your set-up is the original style, here is a wiring diagram. The single indicator light is connected to the middle leg on the flasher (the black wire).

Another drawing, showing the flasher.

Color-codes original switch wiring.

I wrestled with the same problem with my 54 with add-on turn signals. Couldn't get the little internal indicator light to function properly, so I just used a couple Radio shack buzzers...one to each signal. Just tied them in to each circuit....put a little piece of tape over the buzzer hole to quiet them down. Not stock, not pleasant, but not blinking as I drive down the highway!

Cletis has a heck of a tech tip (link above) that I used. Very well written, even for this novice trician. cool

The third term on the flasher is for an indicator light. Flashes on both sides. If you wire in 2 lights hook them to the front turn signals.

Flasher update. So I hooked a light up to the third pole on my 6volt flasher. It works but not all the time it will flash for say 5 times on the left turn signal then quit then start again then quit. The signal still works but the light doesn't. The right side is worse sometime it won't flash at all but it will flash.I can only suspect the flasher maybe or not a good connection \.
Will a 12 volt flasher work on a 6volt system I thought I would get a new flasher... I remember a thread on this but can't find it ... Any thoughts ....I may try the buzzer trip.... Thanks again Peter....

Okay, if you're not looking for the flip response, please skip this. wink Turn signals were not even a dream when mine was built, so bear with me.

Did you check to see if you have enough turn signal fluid? grin

By the way, your truck is gorgeous. Nice job!

If it ain't broke, take it apart and figure out why!

Would the directional signal housing from a 54 fit on the steering column of a 53?

I have a 53 and was wondering if I ever found the housing from a 54 if it would fit on my truck.

TIA

Petmil, on my 53 I put a toggle switch under the dash with a beeper, push switch to left for left turn and to right for right turn. I think I got this from Jim Carter, designed especially for this application. It comes with the toggle switch, beeper and instructions.

I did this rather than having that ugly after market turn signal switch clamped to the steering column. It is a much cleaner look. The signals are connected to my parking lights (front and rear) rather than adding new ones for turn signals.
