It is difficult to tell what you actually did when you were testing. With the ignition on, you should see full voltage at the feed to the coil. With this and the points open, you will see full voltage at the coil connection to the distributor. With the points closed you should see zero volts at the connection to the distributor.
Is there a connection to a switch on the starter?
