The SM318 was used up to the mid 60s depending whether it was a car or truck. There is also a long and short tail shaft versions of the SM318. The weak spot in the 318 is the sliding ring gear and won't take abuse. The all synchro 3 speed that replaced the 318 is a stronger trans.
