I am currently in the process of doing the exact same thing on my 1946 Suburban.
In my case I am using a 216 intake and exhaust manifold so the left hand side is not an issue. On the 216 the exhaust comes straight down while on the 235 it slopes back at about 30 degrees.
On the right hand side I may have to modify the road tube to fit but I am striving for originality so my needs/values may be different.
I doubt that it makes much difference either way.
