Some of the old trucks had the ignition switch that you could turn on and remove the key. The story was that Mr. Farmer wanted to jump in it and go without remembering to bring the key!
I don't understand what kept the ignition system from cooking if this tale is true. How else would it have worked, or what am I overlooking in my understanding?
