Sand to bright metal a place on the inside of the gauge housing that the back of the gas gauge will touch. Also sand the "ears" of the housing where they contact the mounting bolts and nuts.
"DADS50" wrote some good posts regarding the gas gauge and sending unit. Also pics and video. I searched, but couldn't find them. Maybe he or another 'Bolter will provide the links to them.
