The load side is for the electrical 'load', such as lights, etc. The other side' battery' is attached to where the power comes from, battery /alternator. You can test for proper operation by connecting the ammeter and turn on the lights without the engine running, if the needle swings to the (-) side it is connected right. If it swings to the (+) side it is connected backward, so just reverse the wires.
