Tech Tip I wrote. It appears you have an after-market switch similar to the first one listed.
This type switch uses separate wires for the brake lights and for the turn lights. The four wires you have are probably brake, tail, left, right. You cannot use one set of lights for both with this type of switch.
The ideal solution would be a factory switch from a parts truck. I just put one in my '56 and I love it. No more forgetting to cancel the signal.
