even with a poor ground it should do something, and skip the grease, clean tight connections work, especially if you have one of the ground cables directly to a starter mounting bolt with a star washer to dig in - if it doesn't even click the problem is with the solenoid, if it clicks but doesn't engage, the problem is with the starter, and either case could be improper wiring connections
