I have had no issues with the tank being steel. (Tanks didn't offer a '49-52 Chevy car stainless or plastic tank back when I did my conversion.) I do use Stabil fuel stabilizer when I store the truck over the winter, and at about every third fill up the rest of the year, that probably helps some. Worth noting is probably 95% of all trucks of our era use steel tanks, and use "modern" fuels.

The filler attaches via an anodized steel flange with a steel tube that bolts to the tank. The included filler tube fastens to that with a hose clamp. You can kind of see the flange in this photo: http://i645.photobucket.com/albums/...%20Photos%20Oct%202009/2009_10200013.jpg
