Not too sure about using 14gauge wire to serve the ammeter. Especially if using an alternator. Sounds a wee bit small to me to carry the kind of load that could be placed on it.
But I'm not an electrical engineer.
A volt meter can get by with a small gauge wire, has very little draw.
