I am not an electrical engineer but if you are only charging a 8 volt battery with a regulator set at 7.5 volts(the charging rate of a 6 volt system)you are never going to fully charge a 8 volt battery. A battery that is not kept fully charged is not a healthy battery and will fail prematurely.
