I am new to the forum and could do with bit of advice.I am fitting new kingpis to my 57 3100.My confusion is with the thrust bearing. My manual shows a roller bearing for this .The kit I have is correct for the 1/2 ton but does not have a roller bearing. It has two dust caps two bimetal washers and a thick spacer and a thin washer for each side.I have searched this forum and read the tech on kingpins.Frankly some of the advice is conflicting . My guess is that the two dust caps surround the two bimetal washers and either the large spacer or the steel washer goes between the bimetal washers. If you use the thick spacer it fouls on the small dust cap if you use the thin washer its only 1/2mm thick which seems a bit thin as a bearing surface to me and you need something between the two brass surfaces. Also I have a question related to shimming the kingpin the only figure given in the manual is 0.005" is too big there is no minimum measurement.Or should it be with no play but free movement. There seem to be a variety of kits for the same truck and also the various varients .Hense the confusion. I could really use some advice guys as am desperate to get it back together. Thanks Rick | | | |
