I just replaced the master cylinder on my '38. I didn't bench bleed it but it wasn't much of a chore doing it the "normal" way. I've read that a master cylinder will self bleed and that was my experience. We did a standard bleed until we got no more air from the fittings. I had good pedal but by the time I got home after driving home through town I ended up with the best pedal I've ever had on the car. Rock solid with only 1-2" of travel to full lock up.
