You might be referring to the hole through which the factory put in the gear oil after assembly. On some of the the SM420s, instead of a plug there is a grease nipple that serves to further confuse people (the gear oil was "injected" through that nipple). That hole/nipple is not normally used by us mortals (if I am wrong, we will hear about it).
