Peter,
Have you done a "time trial" on a highway that has distance markings? If you do, go 30 mph for 10 marked-miles and measure the amount of time it takes. Calculate the miles per hour.
As red posted above, when you change rear-end ratio (and tire diameters), your odometer's MPH will be off.
