are mistaken, the oil bath air breather filters air, not oil
and it sounds like the guy who talked you out of installing his filter kit did the right thing, the proper filter for the old 6's is a bypass filter available as an option, as pointed out above, and requires no drilling into the oil passages, the holes already exist in the block to install it
