The smoke issue sounds like leaky rings/smooth worn cylinders to me. You could try some Marvel Mystery Oil in the gas/oil and run a tank or two of gas through it and see if the rings clean themselves up to hold better pressure, but it sounds old to me. A compression along with a leak down test might give you some clues.
