Quiet awhile back I posted casting and serial number information for my 216, but wasn't able to solve my identification issue, which still bugs me now. I have a 1950 Chevy 3100 1/2 ton with a 216. The 216 is not the original. In researching the engine I determined that the block & head casting numbers are 3835849 & 3835517, which identifies the engine as a 52/53 216. Now for the strange part. The engine has the serial number DR140622CAL, the date code on the block says CON4 G167 and the engine has main and rod insert bearings, which could have came from a bearing/rod conversion kit that was once available, or the rods were converted. Is it possible that this might be a replacement engine rather thsn a rebuild? Is there any casting or serial info for replacement engines?
