The panhead has a 12 volt generator, and the voltage gets regulated through the ground connection of the field same as the voltage regulation on old GM vehicles. The Harley aftermarket has come out with solid-state (transistorized) regulators that replace the original mechanical regulators. But the price is high. So I thought I'd look for a solid state replacement voltage regulator to an old GM truck so I could use it on my bike. I'm sure it would be cheaper than what the Harley aftermarket vendors charge for a voltage regulator ($83). And replacing the generator with an alternator would cost something like four or five hundred dollars, so that's not an option.
Anyway, I'm big on upgrading old mechanical stuff with electronics. I even build my own electronic ignitions.
