It is probably best to test voltage both on the back of the alternator (batt. post) and across the battery terminals. Ultimately you need to have alternator output voltage reaching the battery, or within .5 volts or so. If you are losing 2.0 or more volts between the alternator and the battery, there is a bad connection which will cause more problems later. The alternator should be putting out 13.5 to 14.5 volts.
