pull the + wire off the coil until you figure out the not-cranking, no sense frying it [heating up usually means the points are closed] ... sounds like you have power everywhere and if the + cable is connected directly to the starter, then it has to be a starter problem .... could be a bad starter, or it could be the push switch on top of it isn't making good contact, which is the first possibility to check, just pop off that switch and look at the large copper contact and spring in there - if it all looks good you need to bench test the starter or have it done
