I'm installing a rebuilt starter on my '51 216 and I've run into the question of shimming. The Chev shop manual makes no mention of shimming but the instructions that came with the starter do mention it. ...they seem very generic tho. They even mention GM trucks from the late '70s, which would have a completely different unit.
Is there anything I need to do or be aware of before installing this thing or is it as simple as alining the gear and flywheel teeth, bolting it on and attaching the wires and spring and foot stuff?
