I think the wire had a socket/barrel fitting on the end and it was pressed onto that post in the center top of the sender. You want the single wire to just touch the center post in the top of the sender in the block.
If you have a mechanical temperature gauge, that used a gas/fluid filled sensor tube, a wire will not work.
