You will notice on the wiring diagram that the rear lights have two filaments. One is strictly for tail lights and the other is for stop and turn. When you just have the turn signal going, the flasher turns the light on and off. When you have the brake at the same time, the other side gives you the brake light. When you have no signal going, you get both brake lights.
