Seriously, that is awful. Kids? Have they caught them yet? If so, perhaps you can seek damages in a small claims court?
As for the insurance, you should always have insurance. You can get collectors car insurance for an agreed amount, full coverage and zero deductible. It's very reasonable. I pay less the $100 per year for an agreed value of $10K. You can start lower and change it as you think the value increases.
