from the sound of your troubleshooting, you may just have a broken cable inner shaft, you should be able to pull the inner piece out of the housing to check that .... nobody can give you specifics about the speedo removal without knowing the year - also it sounds like the "additional piece" may be the adapter for a 2 speed rear end, is this a bigger truck?
