You are probably going to have to come up with some sort of weird adapter circuit, but I have no idea what the resistance range on your Toyota gauge is. The easiest way would be to find a sender from the same type of Toyota as the gauges came from.
An Ohmmeter measures resistance, not current or voltage. An Ammeter measures current, a voltmeter measures voltage. Your standard hand-held multimeter will do all of these, with several ranges for each.
Your connections sound right, the main problem is the dissimilar gauge and sender. Once again, the easiest way to correct this is to find a way to install the Toyota sender in your gas tank.
