Does the generator say 6V or 12V on the data plate? Does the positive or negative cable go to the frame of the truck? Most positive ground systems were 6 volt. Like Kip sez, the regulator cover should indicate voltage and polarity. Headlight bulbs are a good indication too, but voltage may be printed on back of bulb on some models.
