I believe all the smaller-displacement Zephyr V-12's had hydraulic lifters, and they gave a lot of trouble, mostly losing prime and rattling. I don't recall hearing about a miss caused by lifters. Those engines were chronic oil-burners, and terribly underpowered. A lot of Lincolns got retro-fitted with flathead Ford or Mercury V-8's, which is why the 12's are so scarce and expensive now.

I remember back in the 50's all the guys driving old flathead Fords wanted those Zephyr
gears. I believe it may be because of how they were slanted and made a cleaner shift.
