I know that poly bushings soften in hot water to make installation easier. Maybe the rubber bushings will react the same way.

Also, installing rubber handlebar grips, the trick was to coat both pieces with alcohol. It helped the parts slide around while wet, but when evaporated, it made for a firm grip.
