I believe there's a measurable difference in the field coil resistance between 6 and 12 volt generators. I've got a couple of each stashed away, so as soon as I can dig 'em out I'll do some comparing. Most of the 12 volt generators have a stepped-down housing shape, and are longer than 6V units, also. I believe the 6V generators have big slots in the rear of the housing covered by a spring steel band, while the 12V units have a solid housing in the brush area.
