You can buy the step plates at many hotrod shops. I have them on my running boards and they save a lot of wear & tear on the paint for sure. The stainless strips DonA mentioned look great but sure cost $$$. I'm not sure they would protect the paint unless you spaced them a few inches apart as people tend to step and twist the sole of their shoes as they enter / leave the cab. As well, the bright polished stainless will scratch up. If you like the strip idea, I'd have a look at narrow stainless steel flat bar with a brushed finish at your local metal supply house - maybe attach it with a good epoxy adhesive ??
