Wow -- you are close by the Old Dominion Stovebolt Society's (our local group of 'Bolters) favorite event -- the Tri State Show! You probably already know about it (at the Ruritan Fairgrounds just north on I-81 from Winchester). It's our major show of the year and a lot of 'Bolters will be there. I will most likely have my '72 9500 (your truck's big brother) there this year.
I have a '65 GMC 4500 with the 305 V-6 -- mostly the same as yours (a lot of the parts interchange. We do have a lot of knowledgeable big block V-6 fans on Stovebolt who will be able to get you straight on that engine. As for mine, it was sick for a long time, too, until I did the Pertronics upgrade to the distributor. Then, I pulled the Stromberg carburetor and the governor off and threw them away and did the Holley 350 two-barrel upgrade -- what a difference! I do know that that my 305 is fussy on its timing and plugs -- both have to be "just right" or as they say in New York -- fahgeddahboutit. Maybe yours is, too. Maybe they all are. All I know is that there must be a good reason GMC made that engine family for only a decade ....
