Dave,AFAIK there's only two profiles available,Deluxe (for chromes) and standard but as Bill (red58) already mentions the quality of aftermarket parts varies considerably,something you should recognise from your VW days....
Steele are generally considered to be the best available,and i'm not sure if it matters to you but they're made in the good 'ole US of A,not something you hear so much these days....
The problem is not so much the width of the outer lip,but moreso the actual profile,it's a very basic set-up.

really need to seal the glass to rubber
and rubber to body.
The other problem as I found out myself was the glass was wrong at the lower corners,it just wasn't big enough to 'push' the rubber out to the corners to meet the bodywork.
Look familiar? I also think the aftermarket guys err on the safe side by making the glass slightly smaller,or perhaps they really just don't care as long as they get your $$$.
