there is a ball imbedded in the flywheel,it is about the size of a BB. they are often hard to find. that is the mark you use... go back in the old posts, there are several pictures of what it looks like. Also there is no separate mark for exhaust or compression stroke, only one mark for TDC (well there is a couple of different marks on the flywheel, but that is beside the point) TDC could be on exhaust or compression, make sure you don't have it 180 degrees out.
You said you changed the vacumn advance, did you pull the distributor to get the mechanism off?
