Thanks guys for all the insight; especially Cletis for the links to previous discussion on this issue. This is something that obviously is very subjective and there are a number of ways to approach it. Does anyone have any experience with my setup (216, stock intake, fenton exhaust, 2 inch pipes all the way to rear, 4 speed)with Smithy mufflers. I've been told this was the most popular choice "back in the day.". The Smithy's are 30 inches long. The Walkers Cletis likes are 20 inches long. I assume they'll be a little louder than the Smithy's.
