Nothing in the literature indicates a 3-speed being available for a 1-ton. At least not in 48-49. The last top-loader 3-speed was in 47 1/2-tons.
Do you have a SM-420 4-speed in your 55-2nd? With reverse to the left and down? If so you know that you have to push against a spring to get it to go to the left...
The 50 3/4-ton I bought in 03 had sat for so long in neutral that it wouldn't go in any gear due to rust and corrosion built up on the shift rails/shafts.
