I ran into the same problem with my '53. Never could find any release spring or location that would allow me to pull the knob and stem out even though several posts indicated it was easy to do. I can only assume it was an after market switch, particularly when I looked at it and compared it to the shop manual. It is different. Good luck. I never did get mine out and just gave up on the idea.
