Make sure the ground strap is big enough to carry the current. There are two different sizes of the flat braided ones- - -use the big one, especially if you're cranking with a 6 volt battery. There should be a maximum of 1/10 volt drop at each connection, and NO voltage loss from one end of the cable or ground strap to the other. This can be measured while the engine is cranking by putting the leads from a voltmeter at each end of the conductor, or touching the cable terminal with one test lead, and the frame, battery post, or terminal stud that it's attached to with the other. The meter will show how much voltage is being consumed pushing the current across the connection. On 6V systems the maximum voltage drop per connection is 1/10 volt, or 2/10 volt on a 12 volt system.
