I converted my '38 to a one wire 6v alternator. I left my old voltage regulator in the firewall for aesthetic reasons. I moved the heavy wire that ran from the generator to the 'gen' tab on the regulator to the 'bat' tab. That way the ammeter displays correctly but the mechanical regulator isn't in the loop. I don't know which wire on a 3 wire feeds back to the battery but you could connect it to the 'bat' tab & leave your old regulator if you so desire.
