A fuse needs to be able to carry enough current to power whatever item is being operated, and have a low enough capacity to protect the wire in case of a short. The bigger the wire, the bigger the fuse can be. A 16 gauge wire should have a 10 amp or smaller fuse, while a #12 wire can go up to a 15 amp, 20-25 amp for a #10, etc.
